Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeders were uneven from 2.00 lower to 2.00 higher. The supply of feeders was moderate and although there was several larger consignments many reporters noted a larger number of smaller odds and ends this week with overall quality not quite matching what was seen last week. For several barns this was the last sale prior to Thanksgiving. There are several other barns however that are holding special sales next week with some large numbers expected at those scheduled sales. The monthly Cattle on Feed Report was released on Friday and numbers should be viewed as bullish. On feed numbers reported at 99 percent of a year ago that was just slightly above the average pre report estimate but still within the ranges. Marketings were pretty much right in line with expectations at 101 percent. The big news came from the placement number which was reported at 94 percent which was two percent below the average estimate and slightly below the very bottom end of the range. It was also noted that this was the smallest Oct placement number recorded since the report began in 1996. The largest draft this week was from Joplin Regional Stockyards which sold 533 head of 844 lb. steers with one drop of the hammer at 177.00. The second largest draft was also at Joplin Regional Stockyards but was a draft of heifers 307 head with an average weight of 920 lbs. and sold for 157.00. A couple other notable loads this week included a load of 529 lbs. steers tagged as thin fleshed which sold at Green City Livestock Market on Wednesday at 220.50 and finally another load of steers with an average weight of 907 lbs. sold at Callaway Livestock Center for 175.00. Boxed beef cutouts were lower this week choice closed at 254.87, down 4.07 and select closed at 232.83, down 2.44 compared to last week. Negotiated feedlot sales as of Friday afternoon was near 87K head and sold higher. Live sales were reported 150.00-155.00 with a few late week sales at 156.00, dressed sales mostly at 242.00. The Missouri Stocker Formula consist of 7174 head with a weighted average weight of 546.90 lbs. and a price value of 188.42, down 2.90 from last week. The steer/heifer spread is 21.80.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
