Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeders sold steady to 3.00 higher with several load lots of yearlings sharply higher. The supply of feeders was moderate with 54 percent of the feeder offering over 600 lbs. Several load and multi load lots of high quality feeders offered at barns this week. Demand for feeders is moderate. As October comes to an end and wraps up "dead calf month" and the weather becomes more stable buyers are able to deal with those calves with little to no health programs a bit better. Although they will always be less desirable discounts are becoming less. Rains have brightened the moods and even some talk of wheat pasture possibilities in parts of OK and TX providing some much needed outlets besides straight to crowded feedlots. As mentioned earlier several loads and multi load lots were offered at various sales this week. The largest was a multi load lot which sold at Mo-Kan Livestock Market in Butler and consisted of 316 head of high quality reputation steers with and average weight of 824 lbs. and sold for 188.00. Despite the much needed rains that fell the drought has and continues to affect markets. One eye catching fact that has been noticed has been the lower prices for replacements. Going into winter no one has any extra feed and there are many more sellers than buyers for extra mommas currently. Very few pairs will top the 2k mark and it's almost impossible for bred cows to bring that, even though some producers have been forced to turn loose of some very good quality cows. Boxed beef cutouts gained significant ground with choice closing at 263.26, up 9.55 and select closing at 234.49, up 10.13 compared to last week. Negotiated feedlot sales as of Friday afternoon was near 82K head. Live sales were reported from 151.00-155.00 and dressed sales 240.00. The Missouri Stocker Formula consist of 3162 head with a weighted average weight of 548.19 lbs. and a price value of 184.02, up 1.78 from last week. The steer/heifer spread is 21.84.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
