Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, steers and heifers mostly steady to 5.00 lower, except some noted good quality, long weaned calves coming off grass that brought a few dollars more than the previous markets. Demand for feeders was moderate, although the past week featured some temperature swings. A light jacket was needed in the morning but one would be heated up by the time afternoon came around. Buyers know the temperature swings of fall are coming. Health risk will be a concern and will continue until after the first frost and the weather stabilizes. There were a couple of notes from reporters in the sale barns of larger price spreads related to quality, flesh, and weaning status. Corn harvest has started in the state, with a few combines taking to the fields now. The forecast in the near future doesn't seem to show any major events that might slow down progress. There has been some hay cut around the state, as well. Farmers are trying to get one more cutting before fall sets in and harvest really gets going. The current drought monitor showed about 52 percent of the state impacted by some level of drought. Boxed beef cutouts closed on Friday at 252.40 and 226.65, for choice and select cuts, respectively. For the week, choice closed 4.86 lower and select closed 8.08 lower. As of Friday afternoon's report, negotiated feedlot volume was reported at 71,054 head, with live sales 142.00-149.00 and dressed sales 225.00-230.00. The Missouri Stocker Formula consists of 5338 head with a weighted average weight of 541.48 lbs and a price value of 199.46, 4.55 lower than a week ago.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
