Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeder steers and heifers sold 3.00 to 8.00 higher, with some local spots of 10.00 to 15.00 higher. The supply of feeders was moderate to heavy. Even though overall supplies especially for heavy weight cattle is typically at its lightest as summer progresses, there are always several producers who retain cattle to hit the market during the June/July transition and a some of those load lots came to town this week. Over the last several months 160.00 has kind of been the bench mark to base weekly evaluations of those load lots of 8 weight steers off of. That mark was blown away this week as 231 head of 956 lb. steers sold in Joplin Regional Stockyards on Monday at 169.50. Then on Tuesday, Unionville Livestock Market sold multiple loads of heavy 8 and light 9 weights that reached solidly into the low 170.00's. As price levels continue the upward trend many have begun to talk about the record prices from back in 2015 and debating if they are attainable again or not. For reference the week ending June 12, 2015 recorded the weighted average price for 849 lb. steers over the entire state at 222.32. Another key factor to recall is at that same time cash corn was around 3.75 a bushel. On a much less exciting note drought conditions are spreading across the state. Just over 61 percent of the state is highlighted on the latest drought monitor with 10 percent listed in D1 status now. Basically everything south of I-70 is now seeing the effects of extreme heat and no moisture. Several reporters made note of producers starting to cull a few cows and selling feather weight calves before they planned due strictly to lack of groceries in the field. As of the Friday afternoon report negotiated feedlot sales totaled just over 68K head. Live sales continue to the see the large price gap from the north to the south. Live sales in the north this week were reported from 145.00-151.00 with dressed sales at 234.00. Live sales in the south were mostly 134.00-138.00. Boxed beef cutouts closed lower for the week. Choice closed on Friday at 263.82, down 1.16 and select closed at 240.47, down 4.55 compared to last week. The Missouri Stocker Formula for Monday consists of 6522 head with a weighted average weight of 551.38 lbs. and a price value of 191.68, 1.88 higher than a week ago. The steer/heifer spread is 25.53.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
