Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeder steers and heifers sold steady to 5.00 higher with some instances of up to 10.00 higher. The supply of feeders was moderate to heavy following a light holiday week last week. Several loads and multi load strings of yearlings showed up this week with many bringing very impressive prices. Multiple loads of 8 weight steers sold, which have climbed into the low to mid 160's the last couple of weeks, are now seeing tops in the high 160's very close to the 170 mark. Tina Livestock Market sold the highest load this week with a load of 850 lb. steers hitting 168.75. Callaway Livestock Center sold 120 head of 852 lbs. steers at 167.50 and Kingsville Livestock Market sold 173 head of 846 lb. steers at 166.60. Tina Livestock Market also had multi load string of 179 head of 805 lb. steers of mixed color which were put together, a little plainer and thin on flesh which sold at 163.75. Buyers have been very aggressive for these heavy weights as they are pretty hard to find this time of year and most, especially the ones bringing these top prices will perform well and take much fewer days on feed to reach slaughter than the lighter weight calves that are more common. That isn't to say however that lighter weights won't bring good money however, 57 head of 591 lb. steers at Callaway sold on Monday at 202.50, everything but 1200.00 per head. For the entire state, near 1400 head of steers with a weight average weight of 574 lbs. had a weight average price of 194.79. Cash corn prices around the state climbed just over 50 cents this week with many areas now right at or exceeding 8.00 a bushel. Although many areas around the state have had a wet cool spring, this actually slowed grass growth and now heat is coming. There are actually some growing concerns that pastures are going to dry out fast. Currently none of the state is officially registering on the drought monitor. Temperatures are expected to reach triple digits in areas next week and that is bad news in June. Boxed beef cutouts were mixed this week. Choice closed on Friday at 271.32 up 4.06 while select closed at 248.89, down 1.13. Negotiated feedlot sales were higher this week as of Friday afternoon a bit over 85k head were reported with live sales ranging from 136.00-143.00 and dressed sales mostly 225.00-226.00. Monday's Missouri Stocker Formula consists of 9213 (8948) head with a weighted average weight of 545.11 (532.39) lbs. and a price value of 189.60 (165.13), 1.11 higher (2.06 higher) than last week.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
