Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week feeders sold uneven from 2.00 lower to 2.00 higher, with some spots of 5.00 higher on a better offering of 650-750 lb. steers and heifers. The supply is mostly calves with 61 percent of the feeder offering under 600 lbs. this week. This made the few load lots of short yearlings or maybe more accurately heavy weight calves attractive to the buyers. Although it's a tough ticket to get right now there was a few loads and multi load lots of 8 weights that still got very close or just a few cents over that 160.00 mark. Overall spring remains cold and grass growth has been slow, even though unlike other states there is no shortage of moisture. Standing water in many areas with cool soil temperatures has keep planting to a minimum so far, although there was some corn put in the ground in areas last week. Boxed beef cutout values lost ground this week with choice closing on Friday at 260.78, down 7.19 and select at 247.97, down 6.80 compared to the previous week. Negotiated feedlot volume saw the largest volume since early June 2020 with over 133k head reported as of Friday afternoon. Live sales were mostly steady from 140.00-147.00 and dressed sales were steady to 2.00 higher at mostly 232.00. The Missouri Stocker Formula consist of 5239 head with a weighted average weight of 527.82 lbs. and a price value of 187.78, 0.07 higher than last week. The steer/heifer spread is currently 26.70.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
