Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, steer and heifer calves steady to 5.00 higher and yearlings mostly steady. Supply moderate and demand good. The state saw another round of snow, sleet, and ice after the warmer weather early week. Several reporters in the barns noted an active market, with grazers seeing very good demand. Cattle with good health programs and weaning saw best demand and those with extra flesh were less desirable. In feedlot trade, there were 65,567 head of negotiated cash sales, as of Friday’s report. Live purchases ranged from 141.00 to 145.00 and dressed sales at 226.to 229.00. Boxed beef cutouts have continued their decline. Choice has decreased 27.17 and Select has decreased 24.81 since February 1. On Friday, Choice closed at 258.27 and Select closed at 255.41, a 7.58 and 7.22 decrease, respectively. Live cattle futures lost ground this week with the February and April contracts 3.98 and 3.95 lower than a week ago, respectively. Feeder Cattle contracts followed suit, with the March and April contracts closing 5.40 and 6.10 lower than a week ago, respectively. Friday’s cattle on feed report showed cattle on feed at 12.2 million head, one percent above last year and is the highest February 1 inventory since the series began. Placements came in at 2 million head, one percent less than a year ago. Marketings totaled 1.77 million head, three percent less than a year ago. Monday’s Missouri Stocker Formula consists of 5082 (5424) head with a weighted average weight of 549.46 (544.13) lbs and a price value of 193.34 (165.21), 0.33 lower (1.00 lower) than last week.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
