Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to preholiday sales two to three weeks ago, steers under 600 lbs. sold 5.00 to 10.00 higher, steers over 600 lbs. and all weights of heifers sold steady to 5.00 higher. As tradition goes the first full week of the New Year brought a lot of cattle to town. The supply of feeders was heavy with many load lots and big strings of reputation cattle consigned at about every barn in the state. Picking out highlights was difficult as there was a multitude of impressive tickets. Two of which that were by no means necessarily the largest or highest but still eye catching was a 197 head draft of 840 lb. steers that sold at Kingsville Livestock Auction for 166.10. There was several over loads of 8 weights around the state that have once again pushed into that one-sixty something price range. Another ticket of a half load of 530 lb. steers sold at Green City Livestock Auction sold for 214.25. The weather has become much more winter like now and the ground has finally froze up making the ride in the feed truck a rough one. A few locations had minor issues getting cattle out of the country last week but for the most part weather didn’t cause any major transportation issues here in the state. Boxed beef cutouts saw some gains last week, choice closed on Friday at 271.82, up 6.56 and select closed at 261.10, up 2.87 compared to the previous week. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the Friday afternoon report were somewhat slow with slightly less than 50K head reported as packers and feedlot managers were unable to settle on prices, it’s possible more trade took place after hours Friday. Live sales were mostly 138.00-140.00 and dressed sales mostly at 220.00. The Missouri Stocker Formula consists of 11,248 head with a weighted average weight of 563.27 lbs. and a price value of 180.44, 1.84 higher than last week.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
