Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, steers and heifers unevenly steady to 3.00 higher, with some calves bringing 3.00 lower and some as much as 5.00 higher. Demand and supply moderate. Buyers are still conscious of bawling, unweaned calves. However, we’re starting to get more frosty mornings with our temperature swings. High grain prices haven’t turned off farmer feeders, as they are still buying for pastures and wheat fields. Friday’s Cattle on Feed report showed cattle on feed at 11.948 million head, slightly below last year. Placements during October was two percent above last year at 2.245 million head. Marketings of fed cattle were five percent below last year at 1.788 million head. Feedlot trade for the week came in just over 114,000 head, as of Friday’s report. Live sales last week were from 132.00 to 135.00, with most sales late week from 134.00 to 135.00. Dressed sales were 208.00 to 211.00, with most sales at 210.00. Boxed beef cuts closed on Friday at 278.41 and 263.00, for Choice and Select respectively. For the week, Choice was 5.89 lower and Select was 5.70 lower. Monday’s Missouri Stocker Formula consists of 5877 head with a weighted average weight of 549.06 lbs. and a price value of 164.47, 1.38 higher than a week ago.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
