Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeder steers sold mostly steady to 2.00 lower and heifers sold steady to 2.00 higher. The supply was light to moderate and demand was moderate. Heat continues to be a factor in marketing and as typical just not a lot of cattle marketed this time of year. That being said each week there is a few loads of cattle that show up and result in some talk. This week Callaway Livestock Center in Kingdom City sold a load of 822 lb. steers for 160.75 and 227 head of heifers weighting 677 lbs. sold in one drop of the hammer at 161.00. Grain prices continue to be volatile and can make one dizzy trying to follow the daily swings. The Pro Farmer tour took place this week and there was some actual boots on the ground in several states taking samples of the coming crop. Over all yields for Corn was estimated at 177 bu/acre and 52 bu/acre for soybeans. The monthly cattle on feed report was released on Friday without any major news. On feed numbers pretty much matched industry guesses at 98.1 percent, placement at 91.9 and marketings at 95.5 both about a full percent lower than per report guesses. Boxed beef cutouts continued their climb this week. Choice closed on Friday at 345.06, up 20.23 and select at 318.53 up 20.51 compared to last week. As of the final report on Friday afternoon negotiated feedlot sales were just shy of 95K head live sales were from 121.00 in the south to 128.00 in the north and dressed sales were reported from 200.00-205.00. The Missouri Stocker Formula consist of 3518 head with a weighted average weight of 553.12 and a price value of 168.47, 0.91 lower than last week.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
