Market comments — USDA reporter

Not enough feeders offered this week for a good price comparisons, although undertones were mostly steady to firm. The supply was limited by extreme heat making transportation quite stressful. Several barns had too few cattle to publish a report. Feedlot sales for the week as of Friday afternoon totaled about 70K head. Live sales were reported mostly 120.00-124.00 and dressed sales at mostly 196.00. Boxed beef cutouts were higher for the week. Choice closed on Friday at 278.46, up 11.83 and select at 259.19 up 9.25 compared to last week. The Missouri Stocker Formula consist of 2526 head with a weighted average weight of 557.65 and a price value of 168.61, down 2.01 from last week.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
