Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeders sold 2.00 to 6.00 lower, with several spots of as much as 10.00 lower. The supply of feeders was light to moderate and demand was moderate. Supplies were mostly calves as expected for this time of year with only about 40 percent of the feeder offering over 600 lbs. Some areas of the state received storms and heavy rains mid-week which had some impact but most of the usual high volume sales in the state had already taken place before rains came. The big news that continues to weight on the cattle markets is the climbing grain prices, specifically corn which blew past the 6.00 mark without even slowing down then passed 7.00 in most areas and is setting in the 7.60’s at some of the river elevators on Friday afternoon. The cattle on feed report which everyone viewed as bullish was totally over shadowed by corn prices and did not boost the markets even the slightest this week. Boxed beef cutouts continue to climb. Choice closed on Friday at 296.50, up 12.73 and select closed at 283.05, up 10.92 compared to the previous week. That makes the choice 74.00 higher than the 6 year average Friday close which even includes May of last year when prices were heavily impacted by covid disruptions. Despite the climbing values of beef feedlots were unable to see any gains this week and actually sold slaughter cattle slightly lower. As of the afternoon report on Friday negotiated trade was only about 69k head, with live sales for the week reported mostly from 118.00-120.00 and dressed sales mostly 190.00-191.00. The Missouri Stocker Formula consist of 4029 head, with a weighted average weight of 533.78 lbs. and a price value of 159.51, 5.25 lower than last week.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
