Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeders under 600 lbs. sold steady to 5.00 higher, weights over 600 lbs. sold 3.00 to 8.00 higher. It was worth noting however, there were a few spots early week in which light weight calves struggled to find steady money with a few actually quoted as lower. The supply was moderate and demand was moderate to good, with heavier weight cattle finding the best demand. That being said, a 94 head draft of put together steers averaging 555 lbs. with all the bells and whistles sold at Farmington Regional Stockyards, which is far southeast Missouri, for 195.00 which comes out to 1082.25 per head. Boxed beef cutouts continue to soar as grilling season approaches and restaurants get back to more normal business. As of Friday afternoon, choice closed at 272.17, up 19.32 and select closed at 264.07, up 17.10 compared to last week. In the last three weeks, choice has gained over 42.00. Feedlot sales, as of the last report on Friday afternoon, totaled near 106k head of negotiated sales. Live sales were reported from 120.00-125.00 with the better money seen north and later in the week. Dressed sales were mostly 195.00-196.00. Farmers were able to get in the fields early this week before rains came and there was some corn planted. The Missouri Stocker Formula consists of 5668 head with a weighted average weight of 529.97 lbs. and a price value of 172.92, 3.61 higher than last Monday.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
