Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week feeder steers and heifers sold mostly steady to 3.00 lower, with the exception of a few instances of some mid-weight steers and heifers from 600-750 lbs. that sold steady to 5.00 higher. Cattle had to be of top quality and in prime grazing conditions in order to find the better money this week. Many of the heifers were extremely high quality and mostly going back to the farm for development as replacements. The supply of feeders was moderate, much lighter than what has been seen the last few weeks as heavy rains and flooding curtailed movement in the country. Many of the big grazing orders have already been filled at this point leaving the local farmers and some smaller hobby type farmers that may only buy 15-20 head to put on grass for the summer. Feedlot sales as of Friday afternoon totaled just over 77K of negotiated sales. Live sales were reported from 114.00-116.00 and dressed sales mostly 182.00. Boxed beef cutouts were mixed this week with Choice closing on Friday at 229.99, up 4.12 and select at 219.95, down 0.32. The monthly cattle on feed report was released on Friday and numbers were pretty much perfectly in line with pre-report estimates. On feed numbers were 101.6 percent, placements at 98.1 percent and marketings at 97.6 percent. The Missouri Stocker Formula consist of 3933 head with a weighted average of 545.51 lbs. and a price value of 162.24, up 0.08 compared to the previous week.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
