Compared to last reported sale(9-20-22): Feeder steers were too lightly tested either this week or last sale to develop an accurate market trend, however lower undertones were noticed. Yearling heifers under 800 lbs sold steady to 2.00 lower, heifers over 800 lbs sold 3.00-5.00 lower in a narrow comparison. Spring born calves were not tested two weeks ago, no comparisons are available. Demand and offerings today were light to moderate. Quality today was mostly average to attractive. Several load lots of calves were seen today and these offerings were met with the best demand. Calves were in mostly light flesh as many are selling early out of dry country. A good crowd was on hand for todays sale. Market activity was mostly moderate to active. Weigh up cows sold on mostly light demand for light to moderate offerings. Packers showed lighter demand for slaughter cows this week and cow prices were mostly 3.00-5.00 lower than two weeks ago. Feeding cow demand was lighter as well as this class of cows sold mostly 5.00-6.00 lower. Cow quality was average to attractive this week. The cutter cow cutout was 211.41, 0.46 higher as of todays close. Slaughter bulls sold mostly 2.00-3.00 lower in a narrow comparison. Young age cows suitable to feed or rebreed were too lightly tested last sale to develop an accurate market trend, steady undertones were noticed.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
