Compared to last week, steer calves weighing 400-500 lbs and 600-700 lbs sold steady, with 500-600 lbs trading steady to 10.00 higher with the most advance on the 500-550 lb steers. Heifer calves weighing 400-450 lbs on a light test sold with a higher undertone with 450-600 heifer calves trading steady to firm with two pot loads of 680-695 lbs selling with a firm to higher undertone and two pot loads of 702 lb heifers traded 3.00 higher than pot loads of similar weight last week. Demand was good on a moderate supply with a nice overall quality offering of calves with several 20-30 head groups in the offering. Stick out sales included the pot loads of heifers with pot load 684 lbs at 392.50, pot load 694 lbs 387.25, 151 hd 702 lbs at 384.50. Slaughter cows traded with a higher undertone compared to last week's light offering.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
