Compared to the last special two weeks ago, steer calves weighing 400-650 lbs sold steady to firm with a pot load of 965 ld steers trading with a firm to higher undertone. Heifer calves weighing 400-500 lbs sold 5.00-10.00 lower with 500-600 lbs trading steady to firm and 600-700 lbs were not tested with the pot loads of 700-730 lb heifers selling 5.00-6.00 lower than the pot loads weighing near the same and similar quality from two weeks ago. Demand was good on a nice quality offering of calves and yearlings all sold on and active market. The stick out sales included pot load of 630 lb heifers at 415.00; three pot loads of 707 to 722 lb heifers selling from 379.75 to 381.50 and pot load of steers (60 hd) weighing 965 lbs at 343.50. Slaughter cows sold mostly steady on a light offering.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
