Market comments — USDA reporter
Compared to last week, feeder steers and heifers traded steady to firm, with the exception of 550-600 lb heifers and 650-700 lb steers both selling 5.00-12.00 higher. Demand was good on a moderate supply with a nice overall quality offering of 500-750 lb steers and heifers. The main offering was 4 pot loads of 700-800 lb heifers with two pot loads weighing 708-710 lbs at 272.25-273.10, pot load 747 lbs at 268.25 and pot load 800 lbs at 254.75. Slaughter cows on a light test sold steady.
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
