Compared to the last special two weeks ago, steer calves weighing 450-600 lbs sold 3.00-10.00 higher, with 600-700 lb steers selling mostly steady on a much lighter offering than two weeks ago, 700-800 lbs traded steady to firm. Feeder heifers weighing 400-600 lbs sold 8.00-12.00 higher with 600-800 lbs trading steady to firm. Demand was good on a moderate offering with a nice quality offering of calves and yearlings that included three pot loads of 745-768 lb heifers and pot load of 716 lb steers. The pot loads of heifers included two pot loads weighing 745-748 lbs at 269.00, pot load 768 lbs at 263.00 and pot load of steers weighing 716 lbs at 304.25. Slaughter cows sold 5.00-10.00 higher than two weeks ago.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
