Compared to the last special three weeks ago, steer calves under 550 were lightly tested with 550-700 lbs selling steady and yearling steers 800-850 lbs sold with a firm to higher undertone, feeder heifers weighing 450-500 lbs sold steady with 5 weights lightly tested and 6 pot loads of 650-700 lb heifers trading 10.00-12.00 higher than the pot loads from three weeks ago. Demand was very good on the pot loads of heifers and steers weighing 835-838 lbs with supply moderate. The six pot loads of heifers were all top quality with pot weighing 668 lbs at 284.50 , pot load weighing 662 lbs at 282.00 and two pot loads of yearling steers weighing 836-838 lb steers at 268.25. Slaughter cows on a lght test sold firm to 5.00 higher.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
