Compared to the last special two weeks ago, steer calves on a light test weighing 400-550 lbs sold steady to firm, with 550-650 lbs trading 5.00-8.00 higher, 650-700 lbs sold with a higher undertone. Feeder heifers weighing 400-500 lbs were lightly tested, with 500-600 lbs selling with a firm to higher undertone on a light test, three pot loads of 650-700 lb heifers sold with a higher undertone. Demand was good on a moderate offering the main attraction was the three pot loads of heifers weighing 659-688 lbs selling from 266.75-270.25. Slaughter cows on a light test sold 5.00-10.00 higher.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
