Tuesday's auction was a Special Bred Cow and Heifer Pairs sale with the main attraction being several consignments of good quality heifer pairs selling with good demand mostly black with 150-175 lb calves by side selling mostly from 3300.00-3600.00 per pair. Also in the offering was several consignments of young bred cows mostly 3-6 yrs in the second stage selling with good demand with several short solid mouth bred cows in the offering. There was a large offering of breeding bulls in the sale mostly 18 months to 2 1/2 years old bringing 4000.00-4800.00. Slaughter cows sold with good demand as well not quit reaching last weeks's highs trading 3.00-5.00 lower with several high yielding bulls bringing 172.00-182.00.
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
