Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to the last auction two weeks ago, steer calves weighing 450-550 lbs sold with a sharply higher undertone compared to a much lighter offering from two weeks ago, 600-650 lbs sold steady to firm and over 650 lbs sold with a higher undertone on the pot loads of 7 weight steers. Feeder heifers weighing 450-500 lbs sold steady to 5.00 higher with 500-550 lbs steady and a pot load of 661 lb heifers sold 3.00 higher than pot load similar weight and quality from two weeks ago. Several stick out sales with a pot load of top quality steers weighing 707 lbs at 279.75, a pot load of steers weighing 756 lbs at 264.10 and pot load of heifers weighing 661 lbs at 262.10. Slaughter cows sold on a very active market trading firm to 5.00 higher with a very good offering of high dressing cows.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
