Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to the last auction two weeks ago, 4 weight steer calves were lightly tested with last auction, 500-600 lb steers sold steady to 5.00 lower, 600-700 lbs sold mostly steady to 3.00 lower and 700-750 lbs traded steady. Best test on heifers weighed 450-600 lbs and traded steady to 5.00 lower with 650-700 lbs not well tested. Feeder cattle market held up very well since last sale two weeks ago despite a grain market that screams higher and the unrest in the Ukraine that keeps commodities volatile, but lots of good top quality calves especially steers in the offering on Tuesday that sold on a active market with good demand. Slaughter cows sold with a firm undertone on a light offering.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
