Compared to last week, steer calves weighing 400-500 lbs sold with a firm undertone, 500-600 lbs and 650-700 lbs sold firm to 5.00 higher, with 600-650 lbs and 700-750 lbs fully steady to firm. Feeder heifers on a much lighter offering weighing 450-550 lbs sold mostly 5.00-10.00 lower compared to last week's very active and aggressive market, with 550-650 lb heifers trading steady to 3.00 higher, over 650 lbs were not well tested. Good quality offering of steer calves weighing 400-700 lbs all selling on a very active market. Grains were sharply higher on Tuesday as March corn closed 20 1/2 cents higher with March soybeans closing 33 1/2 cents higher as market uncertainties due to tensions with Russia and Ukraine. CME Feeder Cattle futures the front three months closed lower with triple digit losses of mostly 1.20-1.70.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
