Compared to the last feeder cattle auction three weeks ago, 400-500 lbs steer calves were not well tested on a light offering, 500-550 lbs sold steady to spots 3.00 higher with 550-650 lbs selling mostly steady on comparable sales, 650-800 lbs sold 4.00-7.00 lower with the most decline on the 750-800 lb steers. Feeder heifers under 600 lbs sold steady with 600-700 lb trading 3.00-5.00 lower, over 700 lbs not well tested. Demand was moderate to good with supply moderate. CME cattle futures bounced back with triple digit gains with corn, soybean and wheat closed with sharply higher gains with soybeans leading the way over 30 cents higher and corn 8 cents higher keeping a bullish momentum for the grain market to start the new year on a demand driven market. Slaughter cows traded steady to 3.00 lower than three weeks ago.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
