Compared to the last auction two weeks ago, steer calves weighing 400-500 lbs sold near steady on a light test, 500-550 lbs sold steady to 4.00 lower with two weeks ago very active market, 550-700 lbs trading steady to 2.00 higher and 700-800 lb sold steady with two weeks ago. Feed heifers weighing 400-500 lbs sold steady to 5.00 lower, with 500-700 lbs selling steady to 3.00 higher with most advance on the 6 weights, over 700 lbs were not well tested. Demand was moderate to good with supply moderate on a nice quality offering of feeders weighing mostly 550-750 lbs. Slaughter cows sold steady.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
