Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week most classes of steers and heifers were lower. Feeder steers below 600 lbs. were 8.00 to 10.00 lower and above 600 lbs. were 3.00 to 8.00 lower. Feeder heifers 450 to 600 lb. were 7.00 to 11.00 lower. Buyers were reluctant to push the market as the roads were ice covered today and a major storm predicted for tomorrow with 12 plus inches of snow in the area. Most buyers could not get trucks to move the calves from the sale. Some very nice runs and loads of quality calves in todays sale. Flesh condition was light to moderate on todays offering.
