Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week the market was mixed with steers 500 to 550 lbs. 4.00 higher; 550 to 650 lbs. were 6.00 to 7.00 lower; 750 to 800 lbs. were 5.00 higher nd 800 to 900 bs. were steady to 7.00 higher. Feeder heifers below 600 lbs. were steady; 600 to 650 lbs. were 7.00 lower and 650 to 700 lbs. were 5.00 lower. Very good demand for todays offering of mostly weaned and preconditioned calves with shots. Overall quality was good with many nice strings and load lots in the offering. Calves ranged from light to moderate flesh condition. Buyer demand very good. The near blizzard conditions from cold and wind caused some to not make it to town today with their calves. Expecting another large sale next week.
