Compared to last week: Feeder steers under 650 lbs 5.00 to 10.00 higher, over 650 lbs steady to 3.00 higher except 750-800 lbs steady to 3.00 lower. Feeder heifers under 550 lbs steady to 2.00 higher, over 550 lbs 4.00 to 6.00 higher. Very good demand for this extremely large offering of long time weaned and fully preconditioned steers and heifers. Overall quality was very attractive, many long strings offered including full loads and multiple load lots. The market was very active, especially on light fleshed cattle to make yearlings of. There is snow on the ground finally, with more in the forecast, helping to brighten the prospects of a better grazing year. Yearling operators were wiling to chase the market higher as the supply of light cattle is diminishing. Flesh conditions ranged from moderate to moderate plus. The changing weather caused a little heavier fill on the warmed up cattle but buyers were not deterred as otherwise the cattle were very eye appealing. The temperatures were 50 to60 degrees warmer than last week and cattle producers were ready to get their cattle hauled to town and sold, which resulted in such a large sale this week.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
