Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to two weeks ago, feeder steers under 600 lbs sold 10.00 to 14.00 higher; 600 to 800 lbs steady to 2.00 higher; over 800 lbs 7.00 to 8.00 higher. Feeder heifers under 700 lbs sold 1.00 to 4.00 higher; over 700 lbs 3.00 to 5.00 lower. Slaughter cows sold uneven; breakers and boners 2.00 to 6.00 higher, leans 4.00 to 5.00 lower. Slaughter bulls sold 10.00 to 11.00 higher. Demand was good. Compared to last week, fed slaughter steers and heifers in the feedyards sold steady to 1.00 higher at 155.00. In the hay market, demand remains strong and prices were mostly steady, although, grinder hay in the south-central region and ground and delivered in the southwest bumped up a bit.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
