Feeder Special today yielded a higher run than last week's regular sale with the offering of in barn Feeders higher by 270 head, gains in Replacements by 45 head and Slaughter Cattle also increased by 60 head. Moderate buyer attendance with slower trade activity following national trends of lowering prices in Live Cattle and Futures. Should also be noted that we are in the usual late October cycle of the market slowing down and many local producers already having filled their Winter feeding programs. Feeder Steers gave up the smallest market demand with 4 weights lowering $4.50-$10.50 per cwt while 5 weights lower $18.25-$22.75 per cwt and the trend rallying slightly to $15.75 per cwt lower on the heavier end of the run. Heifers started on a similar note with the lighter end of the run lower by $3.75-$7.75 before lowering $11.75-$32.75 per cwt on the heavier end. Feeder Bulls underscore the decrease in return to farm interest, lower by $22 per cwt on 4 weights and $29.50 lower on the heavier end of the run. Value Added Feeders with a guaranteed health program and long weaning hedged against these trends selling $8-$14 per cwt higher than comparable weights, light Value Added Steers sold $9 higher than compared to the same weight last week, for example. Demand trends for Slaughter Cattle seeing less downturn than Feeders but continue the slight but consistent market depression of the last month. Higher quality grade Cows holding better, Breakers lower by a narrow 20 cents per cwt, Boners down $3.75 and Lean averaging $14 lower. Higher carcass dressing types had been more immune to these trends but lowered $5.25-$7 better quality and $13.75 per cwt lower for Lean Cows today. Slaughter Bulls continue to be unaffected by this slant, selling steady at $123 per cwt yet again. Baby Calves, $125-$310 per head. Small run of Slaughter Hogs, $47.50-$86 per cwt.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
