Lighter run of in-barn cattle by half today compared to last week, however Feeder offering bolstered by four Board Sale loads: two each of Steers and Heifers. The Board results can be found on this report as Steers / Heifers Medium and Large 1--2. Good buyer attendance with firm interest considering last week was a Feeder Special with much higher offering. Feeder demand lowered the most for 4 weight Steers by $10-$11 per cwt, easing to $1-$4 lower in the middle of the run before increasing $4.75-$8.50 higher for 6 weights. Heifers followed a similar trend but with demand rising, selling $2.25 higher in the 4 weights and $8 per cwt higher throughout the middle and heavy end of the run. Feeder Bulls $3-$6 per cwt higher for lighter cutting Bulls. The seller should note that Value Added Feeders coming in off a long weaning period and guaranteed health program sold $6-$12 per cwt higher with most hitting the $8 per cwt higher mark. Finishing up with Slaughter Cattle a slightly lower demand follows the trend of the past three weeks; $1-$2-$3 per cwt lower over the quality breaks from Breaker-Boner-Lean. However, higher dressing types sold steady as well as Bulls selling steady, spot on from last reported. Baby calves, $112.50-$230 per head. Shoats, $30-$42.50 per head. Slaughter Hogs, $50-$75 per cwt.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
