Today's run lighter by 175 head with Feeders dropping by nigh 200 head with the difference made up by an increase Slaughter Cattle and double the Replacements from last week. Moderate to fair attendance today with firm buying support throughout the sale although lowering trends can be noted. Feeder Steers on the lighter end of the run sold lower by $10-$12 per cwt, however the heavier end of the run sold steady to $4 higher. Heifers followed an inverse trend, a modest increase by $3 per cwt on the light end while selling $8.50-$10 per cwt lower on the heavy side. Feeder Bulls also saw lower trends this week of roughly $16 to $22 per cwt. It can be noted that lighter Bulls sold closest to similar quality Steers, trailing them by $6-$10 per cwt and this gap widening to $20-$30 per cwt lower in four to five hundred pound weight breaks. Slaughter Cows followed the regional and national trend of the past week hovering at $15 per cwt lower, however, this trend hasn't hit the higher dressing types as hard. Inversely, Slaughter Bulls sold steady to $1 higher. Baby Calves up to $325 per head. Heiferettes, $110-$121 per cwt. Market Hogs, $32.50 to $52 per cwt, Shoats, $12.50 to $40.00. This sale is reported on an out-weight basis.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
