Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?
From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
Compared to last week: best test on yearling steers 900 to 999 lbs mostly steady. Best test on yearling heifers 900 to 949 lbs 2.00 to 5.00 higher. Calves too lightly tested today for an accurate price trend. Today's yearling offering consisted of strings and loads with a few packages of tested open heifers thrown in. Good to very good demand for yearlings again this week. More flesh overall than seen last week on yearlings, including on grass yearlings, some heavy flesh on warmed up yard cattle. Moderate to good demand for calves. Mostly packages of calves this week. A couple weaned packages, weaned from 30 days and longer, but most calves were off the cow. Flesh varied, from light to moderate plus. Different levels of preconditioning and calves without all their shots were discounted at times. An active market on yearlings, with opportunities to buy yearlings off grass dwindling every week. A moderate to active market on calves with a few less farmer feeders in the seats than last week. Many farmers are deep into corn harvest which is progressing rapidly in the nice weather this week. Next feeder cattle sale is Wednesday, October 28.
