Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?
From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
Compared to last week: yearling steers 950 to 999 lbs steady to 2.00 higher, 1000 to 1049 lbs 5.00 to 7.00 higher with instances up to 9.00 higher on a narrow comparison. Yearling heifers not well compared this week. No price trend available on calves as this is the first sizable offering of the season. A large offering of both yearlings and calves for the Customer Appreciation sale. Very good demand for yearlings off grass, good to very good demand for yearlings out of lots depending on flesh condition, some heavy flesh on lot cattle at times. Quality on yearlings average to attractive with quite a few opportunities to fill pens with same weight cattle. Moderate to good demand for this first calf offering. Most calves came off the cow, but there were a few weaned packages available, weaned from 40 days and longer. Preconditioning varied, from no shots to full preconditioning and price spreads reflect some of these unvaccinated calves. Quality varied, especially on packages, from plain to attractive. An active market on yearlings, moderate to active on calves. A handful of farmer feeders in the seats for calves. Bean harvest is mostly done and corn harvest is well underway. Next feeder cattle sale is Wednesday, October 21.
