Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to Saturday: steers 550 to 599 lbs mostly steady, 600 to 749 lbs 6.00 to 10.00 higher with instances up to 15.00 higher on 700 to 749 lbs, 750 to 799 lbs not well compared, 800 to 849 lbs steady to 2.00 higher. Heifers 500 to 549 lbs 15.00 to 20.00 higher, 550 to 599 lbs not well compared, 600 to 649 lbs mostly steady. Very good demand for today's large offering, cattle with grass potential saw excellent demand. Many loads and packages to choose from, most of these completely vaccinated and long time weaned. Like Saturday, flesh condition varied as producers all feed cattle differently. Market active to very active on these attractive calves with many buyers and a few farmer feeders in the seats. Many producers wait to procure grass cattle until the new year and now are competing to get cattle to fill their pens. Next feeder cattle sale is Wednesday, January 15.
