No feeder cattle last week due to Thanksgiving, compared to two weeks ago: steer calves 450 to 649 lbs 3.00 to 5.00 lower except 500 to 549 lbs mostly steady. Best test on yearling steers 1050 to 1099 lbs mostly steady. Heifer calves 450 to 549 lbs 3.00 to 7.00 lower, 550 to 599 lbs mostly steady with instances up to 7.00 higher. Good to very good demand for a couple strings and quite a few loads and packages in today's yearling offering. Flesh varied and several loads of green steers saw the best demand. Moderate to good demand for calves today. Many packages and a handful of loads on offer. Flesh varied but less flesh overall than seen two weeks ago. A couple weaned packages, weaned 30 days and up, but the majority of the calves were off the cow and most had full preconditioning. A moderate to active market with both buyers and farmer feeders attending the auction, but there has been too much uncertainty in the futures complex the last few days to be able to build any confidence. Harvest has mostly wrapped up and the weather remains warmer than usual. Special weaned and preconditioned calf sale on Saturday, December 2, and regular feeder sale Wednesday, December 6.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
