Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: yearlings not well compared. Steer calves 450 to 599 lbs mostly steady, 600 to 649 lbs 2.00 to 3.00 lower. Heifer calves 400 to 449 lbs 2.00 to 3.00 higher, 450 to 499 lbs mostly steady, 500 to 599 lbs 8.00 to 10.00 higher. Moderate to good demand for today's light yearling offering. One string and a handful of loads and packages offered with a few still coming off grass, however, most were out of yards. Varied quality again this week. Moderate to good demand for a large calf offering. A few more weaned consignments this week, from about 30 days and over, however, buyers are reluctant to take a chance on short weaned calves they are afraid are ready to get sick. Preconditioning varied again this week with calves with only a 7 way shot seeing the most discrimination. Lack of full preconditioning and hide color represent wide price spreads in the calf market at times. Flesh varied again this week, from light to moderate plus, with some creep fed calves in the mix. A moderate to active market for this offering with both buyers and farmer feeders in the seats. This has been a mostly positive week for the futures, however, the confidence seen earlier this fall is missing. Quite a bit of crop left in the country but good weather for the rest of the week could see a lot of it finished up. No feeder cattle next week due to Thanksgiving, two feeder cattle sales the following week, regular sale Wednesday, November 29, and special weaned and preconditioned calf sale in Saturday, December 2.
