Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Few good comparisons to last week on either yearlings or calves, best test on steer calves 500 to 549 lbs 2.00 to 4.00 lower and best test on heifer calves 400 to 449 lbs mostly steady. Moderate to good demand for yearlings today. Many packages and a handful of loads made up the yearling offering, quite a few of these still coming off grass. Lots of plain quality yearlings on offer as producers clean up for the season. Moderate to good demand for calves this week, again hide color and shot records determine what buyers are willing to give for a calf. A few weaned consignments again this week, however, the majority of the calves were off the cow. Slightly more flesh overall on calves, but mostly light to moderate flesh. More interest in calves this week as last weeks' bout of winter weather has passed and temps are expected to improve throughout the week. A moderate to active market for both yearlings and calves, both buyers and a few farmer feeders in the seats. Quite a bit of crop still out in the field and producers are pushing to get it all harvested. Next feeder cattle sale is Wednesday, November 8.
