Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: best test on steers 900 to 949 lbs 7.00 to 10.00 lower, 950 to 1049 lbs 3.00 tp 5.00 lower. Heifers not well compared today. Moderate to good demand for yearlings this week. Several long strings and many loads and packages, many packages being tested open heifers, on offer with all but one consignment coming off grass. Less flesh overall than last week as expected with less lot cattle. Quality similar to last week, from plain to attractive. A few consignments of unweaned spring calves offered, these were met with light to moderate demand. A moderate to active market for this offering with recent futures markets making buyers more cautious. Also, producers are trying to get harvested and want to concentrate on accomplishing this large job before taking on cattle. Next feeder cattle sale is Wednesday, October 11.
