Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: best test on yearling steers 900 to 1000 lbs 4.00 to 6.00 higher. Best test on yearling heifers 900 to 950 lbs mostly steady. Calves compared to Saturday: steer calves 500 to 600 lbs 8.00 to 12.00 lower, 601 to 650 lbs 2.00 lower. Best test on heifer calves 450 to 500 lbs steady to 3.00 lower, 550 to 600 lbs 3.00 to 4.00 higher. Good to very good demand for a large offering of yearlings today. A couple strings as well as many loads and packages offered, overall quality on yearlings more attractive than last week. Flesh similar, from moderate to moderate plus with some heavy flesh at times. Good demand for calves today. A smaller offering than Saturday, with many packages and a handful of loads, roughly one third of today's calves were weaned. Flesh varied, from moderate to some heavy. Overall quality less attractive than Saturday. A moderate to active market for today's offering. Some areas saw light snow overnight with larger accumulations farther north. Next feeder cattle sale is Wednesday, December 14.
