Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: a lighter test of yearlings this week with best test on 950 to 1000 lb steers 5.00 to 7.00 higher, other weight classes of yearling steers and heifers not well compared. Good to very good demand for yearlings today. Yearlings both off grass and out of yards in mostly light to moderate plus flesh. Many of the packages were tested open heifers. Different weight classes of calves today than last week so an accurate price trend can not be established. A hand full of loads and many packages made up today's calf offering which was met with mostly good demand. Overall quality more attractive than last week. A couple packages of weaned calves, weaned about 60 days, but the majority of the calves came off the cow. Varied preconditioning again this week and calves without at least a full round of fall shots are discounted at times. An active market with both farmer feeders and order buyers attending the sale. Many producers are still harvesting, this might be mostly finished up by next week as conditions have been favorable. Next feeder cattle sale is Wednesday, November 2.
