Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: steers 550 to 700 lbs 1.00 to 4.00 lower, 701 to 800 lbs mostly steady. Heifers 550 to 700 lbs mostly steady with an instance up to 6.00 higher on 700 to 750 lbs. Good to very good demand for light fleshed calves suitable for grass, moderate to good demand for feeding type cattle. Varied flesh again this week, from light to some heavy flesh at times. Quality similar to recent weeks, mostly average to attractive. An active market seen for the offering. A warmer day today with temperatures in the 30's and 40's expected for the rest of the week. Next feeder cattle sale is Wednesday, February 2.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
