Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: steers 550 to 700 lbs 1.00 to 3.00 higher, 701 to 850 lbs mostly steady. Heifers 550 to 700 lbs mostly steady, 701 to 750 lbs 2.00 to 4.00 higher. Another large offering this week featuring many packages and loads of mostly home raised steers and heifers. Cattle suitable for grass programs saw very good demand again this week, feeding type cattle saw good to very good demand as well, mostly depending on flesh condition. Flesh and quality very similar to last week, mostly average to attractive quality and varied flesh, from light to some heavy. An active market seen for the offering. Some cattle coming to town earlier than they normally would due to tighter feed supplies. A very cold day today with wind chills well below zero. Next feeder cattle sale is Wednesday, January 26.
