Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: best test on steers 900 to 1000 lbs and heifers 850 to 900 lbs steady. Calves too lightly tested today for comparison. Good to very good demand for many strings, loads, and packages of yearlings. Just like last week, quality varied but many attractive yearlings to choose from. Flesh light to moderate plus with some heavy flesh at times, cattle came both off grass and out of yards again this week. Just a couple consignments of spring calves, these were met with mostly moderate demand with best demand seen for a consignment of Red Angus calves. The area received quite a bit of moisture over the weekend and again today which kept most of the spring calves at home. Inches of rain have made for muddy roads and lots and have brought harvest to a halt for now. There is little interest in putting calves into these wet and muddy conditions. An active market for yearlings, moderate at best for calves. Next feeder cattle sale is Wednesday, October 20.
