Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: yearling steers 900 to 1050 lbs steady to 2.00 higher. Steer calves 500 to 550 lbs 4.00 to 6.00 lower, 550 to 650 lbs mostly steady. Yearling heifers not well tested last week, heifer calves 450 to 600 lbs mostly steady with instances 2.00 higher on 450 to 500 lbs. Good to very good demand for several strings and a couple packages of yearling steers and heifers. Quality mostly attractive and flesh varied, from light to moderate plus. Moderate to good demand for today's calf offering consisting of mostly packages with just a handful of loads. Overall quality less attractive than last week, but still many attractive calves to choose from. About half the calves today were weaned, from 35 days and up, and most had full preconditioning, or at least fall shots. Flesh mostly light to moderate. An active market with buyers and some farmers attending the sale today. Next feeder cattle sale is Friday, December 18, the final feeder sale of 2020.
