Last feeder sale was two weeks ago: Steer calves from 500 lbs to 550 lbs were 12.00 to 15.00 higher, 550 lbs to 650 lbs were 3.00 to 5.00 higher, 650 lbs to 700 lbs were 10.00 to 12.00 higher; Heifer calves from 450 lbs to 650 lbs were generally 4.00 to 8.00 higher. No other comparisons were available. Most of the calves were fully preconditioned, and in light to moderate flesh condition and right off the cow. A couple of consignments of weaned calves today. There was a large crowd with lots of order buyers, and several framer feeders competing with internet bidders for todays offering. The best demand was for full loads and good interest in part loads and packages. The market was very active as buyers wanted to buy calves. Good demand for todays yearlings that consisted of mostly spayed and tested open replacement heifers. There were several consignments that were offered as multiple loads of the same sort. The next feeder sale will be the annual weaned and preconditioned calf and yearling sale Friday, December 10th. Stay safe and eat BEEF

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
