Compared to last week: Steer calves from 450# to 599# were $6.00 to $10.00 higher, 600# to 699# were $2.00 to $4.00 higher; heifer calves from 400# to 449# were $2.00 to $4.00 higher, 450# to 599# were $7.00 to $10.00 higher, 600# to 649# were $2.00 to $4.00 higher. No other comparisons available. Good demand all day long for this large offering of calves and yearlings. The best demand was for full loads, especially when offered as multiple loads of one owner cattle. Lots of interest in part loads and packages as well today. Most of the calves were fully preconditioned, in light to moderate flesh and right off the cow. A couple consignments of weaned calves today. There was a large crowd today with lots of order buyers and several farmer feeders competing with internet bidders for todays offering. A few consignments still show some affects of last summers drought, rougher hair coat, light flesh condition and lacking the "bloom" that some calves are showing right now. Lots of interest in todays limited supply of yearlings. Next feeder sale will be in two weeks on December 3, 2021. Stay safe, and Happy Thanksgiving.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
