Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last weeks sale : yearling steers from 800 lbs to 850 lbs were steady to $4.00 lower, 900 lbs to 949 lbs were steady to $3.00 higher. Higher under tones were noted on yearling heifers as there weren't sufficient numbers to make a comparisons. An active market on the yearlings as available numbers of yearlings are dwindling. The yearlings were desirible being in light flesh condition coming off dry pasture. Some parts of the area received from 1/2" to 1" of rain last night, while other areas are still in desperate need of moisture. A larger offering of spring born calves this week than last week with the market all over the board. Steer calves would be generally steady with the heifer calves steady to higher in most instances. Examples of the erratic calf market: a load of really nice steer calves weighing 527 lbs brought $198.50, while a load of steer calves weighing 545 lbs brought $166. A load of steer calves weighing 18 lbs heaver brought $32 cwt less. Both loads had been fully preconditioned, right off the cow, and from reputation ranches. You tell me what the market is?
